The Vardon Trophy, established by the Professional Golfers Association of America in 1937, was named in honor of the great British golfer, Harry Vardon. From 1937 through 1941, it was awarded to the player who had the best overall record on the PGA tour, based on a point system. Since it was restored to competition in 1947 after a four-year suspension, it has gone to the U.S. player with the lowest stroke average in tour events. To be eligible, a golfer has to play at least 60 official tournament rounds. The Harry Vardon Trophy is awarded each year to the leading European player on the Volvo Order of Merit.

Trivia question: How many times did Jack Nicklaus win the Vardon Trophy for low scoring average on the PGA Tour?
Answer: Zero. Nicklaus led the Tour in scoring average eight times, but in none of those years did he meet the requirements for the Vardon Trophy, mostly having to do with minimum rounds played.
